Electrolux freezer had heavy ice and a water leak in Castro Valley
A Castro Valley homeowner called because an Electrolux refrigerator was developing a large amount of ice in the freezer while water repeatedly leaked from the appliance. These two symptoms pointed to the same drainage problem: water produced during the automatic defrost cycle was not reaching the drain pan beneath the refrigerator.
Inspection showed frozen water across the bottom of the freezer. This was more than ordinary surface frost. Water had collected below the drawers and frozen into a solid layer, indicating that the complete defrost drain path needed to be opened, cleaned and checked.

Freezer door removed for safe access and defrosting
The freezer door and interior components had to be removed so we could reach the frozen drain area without damaging the drawer hardware or refrigerator liner. Once the compartment was open, we used a Wagner steamer to melt the accumulated ice in a controlled manner and expose the drain opening.
Heavy freezer ice should not be chipped away with a knife, screwdriver or other sharp tool. Those methods can puncture a refrigerant line, damage the liner or break hidden components. Open flames and uncontrolled high heat can also deform plastic and create a fire risk. When ice is extensive or water is leaking near electrical components, disconnect the appliance and arrange professional service.
A clogged long drain tube caused the recurring ice
Clearing only the visible ice would have provided temporary relief, but it would not have corrected the restriction. We pulled the refrigerator forward and accessed the drain connection near the condenser compartment. On this appliance, the drain tube follows a comparatively long path, giving residue, dust and debris more space to collect over time.
We removed the tube and found the restricted section. Because the blockage was inside the drain path, defrost water could not travel freely to the drain pan. It backed up into the freezer, where it froze after cooling cycles and eventually contributed to water leaking from the appliance.

Drain tube cleared with a Wagner steamer
The removed tube was cleaned with controlled steam and pressure from a Wagner steamer until the passage was open. We then checked the tube and reinstalled it in its original position. No replacement part was required because the existing drain tube remained serviceable after cleaning.
Professional access matters on this type of repair. Removing the freezer door, managing melted water, moving the refrigerator and reconnecting the drain tube incorrectly can create additional leaks or damage. The repair must restore the complete route from the freezer drain opening to the lower drain pan.

Condenser coil cleaned while the rear was open
With the rear service area already accessible, we also removed accumulated dust from the condenser coil. The condenser releases heat collected from inside the refrigerator. Keeping the coil and surrounding airflow area clean supports normal heat transfer and reduces unnecessary strain on the cooling system.
The dusty condenser was not the cause of the freezer water leak; the clogged drain tube caused that complaint. Cleaning the coil was additional preventive maintenance completed while the refrigerator was already pulled out and the rear section was accessible.

Reassembled, tested and cleaned after service
After the drain path was restored, we dried the freezer area, reinstalled the tube, replaced the rear components and assembled the freezer door and drawers in the correct sequence. The refrigerator was returned to position and normal operation was checked.
We also wiped down the accessible work areas and removed the water, dust and debris created during the repair. The freezer was left clean, the drain could carry defrost water again and the customer was happy with the result.
