Location: San Ramon, California
Appliance: Samsung Triple Cooling four-door refrigerator, model RF23J9011SR/AA, serial 07GG43BH207527
Replacement part used: Drain line and rear drain tubes. No replacement part was required; the existing drain system was defrosted, cleaned, and restored.
Customer complaint: Water leaked onto the floor about once a week, sometimes from the left corner of the refrigerator and sometimes from the right.
Diagnosis: A large amount of water had collected in the fresh-food compartment. The fresh-food evaporator drain path was blocked, and the rear drain tubes that carry defrost water to the drain pan were heavily contaminated.
Repair completed: We disassembled the fresh-food section, fully defrosted the evaporator area, cleared the internal drain line, cleaned the rear drain tubes, cleaned dust from the condenser coil, reassembled the refrigerator, and tested operation.
Result: Defrost water drained correctly after service, no new leakage was found during testing, and the refrigerator was returned to normal operation.
Samsung refrigerator leaking water in San Ramon
The customer reported a recurring refrigerator leak that appeared about once a week. Because water sometimes reached the left side of the floor and sometimes the right, the source was not obvious from outside the appliance.
After opening and disassembling the fresh-food area, we found standing water inside the compartment. This showed that the leak was not coming from a supply connection. Defrost water was unable to leave the fresh-food evaporator area through the normal drain path.
Clogged drain line diagnosis
This Samsung model uses a Triple Cooling design with separate evaporator sections. On this refrigerator, the blockage involved both the drain path inside the fresh-food section and the rear drain tubes that carry water into the drain pan. Dirt and residue in those tubes restricted the flow until water backed up into the refrigerator and eventually reached the floor.
The model label identifies the refrigerator as Samsung RF23J9011SR/AA, serial 07GG43BH207527. The correct repair procedure and access points depend on the complete model code.
Fresh-food evaporator defrost and drain cleaning
We removed the interior components needed to reach the fresh-food evaporator. The evaporator and drain area were then fully thawed so the drain could be cleaned without damaging the liner, tubing, or evaporator.
After the ice was removed, we cleared the internal drain line and cleaned the dirty rear drain tubes. Both parts of the drain path must remain open so water produced during an automatic defrost cycle can reach the drain pan instead of collecting under the fresh-food drawers.
Condenser coil cleaning and final test
While the refrigerator was accessible, we also removed dust from the condenser coil. A cleaner condenser has better airflow and helps the refrigeration system release heat more efficiently.
We reassembled the fresh-food compartment, confirmed that the drain path was open, and tested the refrigerator. Water no longer backed up inside the compartment, and no leak was present after service.
How to reduce the chance of another drain blockage
Drain-tube contamination develops gradually. For this household, inspecting and cleaning the refrigerator drain system about every two years is a practical preventive interval, although actual timing depends on use and conditions. If water appears under the drawers, ice forms below the evaporator cover, or water begins reaching the floor, schedule service before the blockage becomes more severe.
Do not use sharp tools to break ice around an evaporator. A punctured refrigerant line or damaged liner can turn a routine drain cleaning into a major repair.
